It’s day zero of the International Consumer Electronics Show, one of the oldest and most important electronics shows in the world and the unofficial kickoff of the technology year.
Set in fabulous Las Vegas, CES 2014 is expected to attract crowds of close to 150,000 visitors starting with Tuesday, January 7, the official opening day of the whole extravaganza. But as it has become a trend in the last years, all the big announcements will happen before the show, starting today, when Nvidia will reveal some of its plans for the next twelve months. Tomorrow is press day at CES, meaning that all the big companies will hold events to show off new products or simply introduce existing products to a predominantly North American audience. Press members, our team included, will have to juggle with announcements, press releases, breaking news and all the madness that makes CES and other shows like it so exciting, but also sometimes overwhelming.
CES is a generalist show, so big players like Samsung, Sony, or LG will come up with all kinds of products from laptops, to wall-sized TVs (expect a lot of 4K hyperbole) to connected appliances, so events may not be mobile-centric like it happens at MWC Barcelona. And there will be hundreds of other companies hawking every type of electronic product you can imagine. But mobile is the hottest category of the moment, and we do expect some good stuff to come out next week.
Here’s a brief rundown:
- Nvidia may introduce Tegra 5, possibly updates to Shield and Tegra Note
- Meizu will show off their latest smartphones
- Huawei – probably new phones
- Asus – possibly new tablets, news on North American availability of existing products including the PadFone
- Samsung - new line of Exynos processors, possibly introduction of new display technology, wearables, and tablet devices
- Pebble – possibly new smartwatch
- Intel – a project aiming to put Android apps on Windows laptops was rumored last week; wearable devices
- Google – while it’s unlikely there will be any major stuff from Google, we heard talk about a joint announcement with Audi about Android on in-car infotainment systems
- Sony – possibly new devices (Xperia Z1 Mini?)
- ZTE, Archos, Acer, and Lenovo have all already announced the products they want to exhibit last week.
- LG – rumored to introduce wearables, and possibly other devices
- Qualcomm – info on Snapdragon 805, 64-bit plans, and more
Wearable devices, from smartwatches, to smart glasses, to fitness monitors of all shapes and sizes, are going to be hot at this year’s CES, so we expect to see a lot of cool new products on display, and hopefully not all of them will turn out to be vaporware. Accessories like cases, keyboards, and Bluetooth speakers will also be out in force, and we’ll do our best to separate the good stuff from the duds.
